The Awesome Salad

Audio / Produced by The High Calling

Transcript

An American businessman named Larry once spent six months in Britain, during which time he lunched with an English gentleman.

“How is your salad?” his host inquired.

Eager to appear grateful, Larry responded, “The salad is awesome.”

The Englishman paused and looked at Larry. “If you use a word like ‘awesome’ to describe a salad, what have you left to describe God?”

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Every word in our vocabulary is a blade to sharpen our meaning. As a blade dulls from misuse, so does our communication. The inappropriate use of words robs our language of its meaning and power. Our words—and how we use them—matter in the high calling of our daily work.

Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the skies. You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!

(Ps. 68:34-35)
